Meta Tags

Meta Tags are used to provide metadata about a Web page. This metadata is used to help Search Engines index and categorize your Web pages correctly.

Common Meta Tags

The following is a comprehensive list of the most common Meta Tags used to provide additional information about Web pages for Web browsers and Search Engines.

Title Tag

The <title> tag defines the title of a Web document. The title element is perhaps the most important element of your Web page in terms of SEO. The <title> tag defines the title for the Web browser toolbar. It also provides the title for the Web page when it is added to your Browser Favorites or Bookmarks. And finally, the most important aspect of the <title> tag is that it is used to display a Title for the Web page in Search Engine Results Pages. The content you use for your <title> tag will be the exact content used by the Search Engines as the Title for your Web page.

Description Tag

The <meta name="description"> tag is similar to the title tag in one way: it is important because its contents are actually used verbatim to describe your Web page. Specifically, the contents of the <meta name="description"> tag are used by Search Engines to describe your Web page in the Search Engine Results Pages.

The main reason this is important is: users will use this content to decide whether or not your Web page contains the information they are searching for. If a user is searching for information about apples and your Web page <meta name="description"> tag contains information about oranges, the user will pass by your Web page and go to a Web page with a stronger or more relevant description. We suggest using a description that engages users and calls on them to make an action such as clicking on the link to your Web page.
