What is wrong with my Images?
SEO pros say that my Web site is poorly designed for SEO because my Images aren't accessible. What does this mean?
Why are my Images inaccessible? What makes them that way?
Let's start with the basics. What are Images useful for anyway? Pictures can do something that words cannot do. Pictures can give users a visual representation of information. Oftentimes, Images can give users a representation of a massive amount of information. A picture is worth a thousand words because our brains are able to process everything that is happening in one picture faster than we might be able to read a thousand words. But there is a problem with this logic when it comes to Web design or more specifically - accessible Web design.
You don't have to think very hard to figure out an instance where a picture or an Image is not going to be able to tell someone everything we might want to state whether we had a thousand words worth of Imagery or not. If a user is unable to see our picture or our Image then our user is unable to receive any input at all as to what that picture or Image represents. Right?
If a blind person came to my Web site (and they may very well be doing that right now) and I was using a picture or an Image to display all of this text then that user would be unable to read anything I have said in this text. A blind person or even a visually impaired person (color blind) will be unable to make out what I am trying to say in a picture or Image.
Well, if this is true, how will I make my Web site accessible? How will I be able to ensure that my users are able to read or access all of my content? If you want to know how to make your Images accessible then you should read more.
